About Zestafoni
Zestafoni is a city in western Georgia (Imereti region) and the administrative center of the Zestafoni Municipality. It serves as one of the country's most significant railway and highway hubs. The city is home to a major black metallurgy enterprise—the Zestafoni Ferroalloy Plant.
Zestafoni began evolving into an urban-type settlement in the 1860s. Until 1937, it was officially known at various times as Qvirila and Jugheli, though the local population traditionally referred to it as Zestafoni. It was granted town status in 1917, and finally, city status in 1926.
The city is divided into several neighborhoods. According to legend, the surroundings of Zestafoni were once covered in forests and marshes. When building houses, locals used wooden shingles (qavari) for roofing; consequently, one of the districts was named "Saqavria." The city features several recreational areas, including the Varinka Machavariani-Tsereteli Square, "Irines Park," and others.
